The New York 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course teaches you the knowledge and skills you need to become a safer, more responsible driver. New drivers will learn New York traffic laws, defensive driving skills, rules of the road and much more!

This 100% online program is approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) through Defense Drivers Discount and makes you eligible to take a road test upon successful completion. To take the course, students must be 18 or older at the time of purchase and have a valid NY State Learner's Permit. You must take your road test within one year of completing the pre-licensing course. All new drivers ages 18 years and older must complete the 5-hour pre-licensing course before scheduling the road test for their first driver license.

Fill out your information.

You will first have to register using the email where we will send you a 4-digit code to ensure we have the correct email to send your completion certificate.
Your name must be typed in exactly as it is on your current NY State Learner's Permit.
The address you enter must be the address you want us to mail you your Certificate of Completion.
You must add in your date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)
Add your Learner's Permit number in correctly so we can let the DMV know you are eligible for the class.
If you type any information incorrectly and need to change it after you have completed our course, there is a $15 fee for updates and reprints.

Biometrics and security questions.

You will be asked to upload a copy of your NYS Learner's Permit and follow the prompts to take a selfie for Facial Recognition.
Next, pick whichever 10 questions you would like to answer and those will be your personal security questions that will be asked a few times throughout the course. This level of security is to provide authentication that it is you taking this course, and these are required by the NY State DMV.

Our online course has only 6 units that you can read at your own pace. Log on and off from any computer as often as you want. Our site is available to you 24/7 so you can learn when it is best for you. Important: Please remember that NY State Law requires that you complete the course within 30 days of registration.

Quiz.

At the end of section review you will have a short, 4-question quiz that you must pass to continue.
You will have 3 attempts to get 3 out of 4 questions answered correctly.
Need help? We offer a VERY handy Key Points sheet that you can print out and refer to in case you want to make sure you remembered everything correctly.
Once you have completed the last easy quiz in the last section, you are done!
We will report your completion to the DMV and will send you an email with a receipt of completion.
After you successfully pass the course, your completion information will be automatically submitted to the state. You do not need to print a course certificate to prove course completion. To get your first driver license, simply schedule an appointment for your road test and pass your behind-the-wheel assessment.
